NEW LINES FOR 2016 We have been trying to squeeze quite a few new lines onto our shelves in the last few weeks, so we are gradually demoting some of our slower selling products to “special order only”. We keep seeing new food ranges based on the Raw Food concept, and it is difficult to know which ones to stock, unless customers ask for them specifically. Some times we receive samples from the suppliers, and occasionally particular items grab our attention. Raw Gorilla snacks and breakfast mixes which seemed especially tasty so we are currently stocking two varieties of Munchies (snacks) and three varieties of Crispies (breakfast). We are also trying a selection of products from The Raw Greek: olives, sun-dried tomatoes, thyme honey, carob flour, and salt-free pistachios. Grain Free Pasta is another newish idea with offerings under a few different brand names. We are trying out Really Healthy Pasta, which seems good value, as well as being higher in protein than other brands we have seen. We currently have Mung Bean Fusilli and Buckwheat & Golden Flaxseed Fusilli and Penne. Faith in Nature have supplied a popular collection of shampoos and other products for over 30 years, and have been extending their ranges recently. We now have their Brave Botanicals range of shampoos and conitioners, with four varieties of each, currently selling at £5. ...Read More

Treating Pain and Inflammation
Ben Brown led a seminar in May 2016 at the Bagnall Centre on a very topical subject – Pain and Inflammation. There is currently a pain epidemic in Britain; 31% of the population report chronic pain of some kind, including backache, digestive issues and arthritis. Unfortunately drugs provide only short term relief from symptoms without addressing the cause.
Subtle chronic inflammation is a result of ‘wear and tear’, including in the brain, a net result of environmental factors that influence genes, such as diet, smoking, stress, lack of sleep and lack of exercise etc.
Nutrition is the best way to treat chronic inflammation. Food is not just fuel (energy, protein, carbs etc) but can change the body at a cellular level. Foods influence pain pathways in the body and can therefore relieve pain.
The modern Western diet is processed and meat-based, which gives high biomarkers of inflammation, whereas a traditional plant-based diet lowers the markers. Modern diets also tend to have an imbalance of omega 3 to omega 6 ratio – too much omega 6 can be pro-inflammatory.
Replacing a standard Western diet of processed foods, excess calories, sugary drinks, refined carbs and additives with a plant-based diet of vegetables, wholegrains, herbs and spices, fish and fish oils, nuts and seeds, tea and olive oil will help reduce pain and inflammation in the body.
For quick relief, turmeric has 245 chemical compounds which block many of the pain pathways in the body, and is good for arthritis, depression, gastric inflammation and disease prevention. Boswelia is also anti-inflammatory, helping to relieve asthma, arthritis bowel disease and chronic pain, and is also fast acting at low doses. Omega 3 reduces inflammation at a cellular level.
Following an anti-inflammation diet can give a significant reduction in pain compared to an ordinary omnivorous diet in as little as two weeks.
